"Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive." --Howard Thurman

My algorithm - ymmv:

1. Take the list of things you'd like to do RIGHT NOW.
2. Eliminate the things that will restrict your flexibility in other ways forever. (Ideally, at this point in your life, this doesn't actually exclude choices, unless "I'd like to amputate my left leg at the knee!" is on your to-do list; careers can always be changed.)
3. If you can't rank-order the remaining list in terms of preference, pick the one you know the least about - it's most likely to lead you in a surprising direction (and you'll find out whether you like it or not soon enough).
4. Run. Continuously check to see if happy. If not, goto 1, repeat.

I really honestly believe that you should do what makes you happy [ironic i'm telling you of all people this]. Maybe for some people it's the making a lot of money that is really what makes them happy, so those kind of jobs are awesome for them. For me, it's the international development/policy stuff that makes me super happy, and I know that I'm never going to be making a lot of money doing that, but I also know that I'll be happy. I don't think that you should sell yourself short in any way by not doing something you really do love because you don't think you'll make money, or people won't "respect" you. People respect people who are passionate, who love what they do, and who excel at what they do because they are willing to put so much time, thought, and effort into it. I honestly believe that no matter how crazy a combination of things someone wants to do, everyone can find or create the perfect job/life path for them, it's just a matter of sticking to your guns and not getting sidetracked by other people who do something because they think people will like them for it or they think since they'll be making a lot of money even if it's not their dream job they'll be happy. I also honestly don't think that (especially as an undergrad) anyone really ever closes any doors - they're always open if you want it bad enough. College is about figuring out what you like, want to do, etc. - and you only close doors if you want to for now.

Hey Brian,

I am in the master's program in digital musics at dartmouth college and hope to go to Rwanda next year to work for OLPC helping children compose music with their XOs. Could you send me some OLPC contacts in Rwanda?

Thanks so much. Interesting work you're doing.
